somewhere between 700 -- 1000 is probably what your are looking at, depending on what you get for a tank... better the tank the more it is going to cost...

Might I suggest something though... Ask about tank less hot water heaters....The are a little bit more $ up front... however they heat water only when it is need and don't keep 40 gallons warm all the time....
