I always spell it the long way. I believe it to be correct. However I have gotten mail with the 'boro spelling. So I think it is up to you.
I love when you have to fill in some form and they give you a line/space for the town and you have to squeeze Moultonborough into it....
That when you use the boro ending I guess.
