CONCORD, N.H. -- New Hampshire's unique hallmark of spring -- ice-out on Lake Winnipesaukee -- has been declared.

Ice-out signals when the M.S. Mount Washington cruise ship can leave its Meredith winter dock and travel the lake unimpeded by ice floes.

Capt. Jim Morash declared ice-out at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday.

The Mount Washington won't actually cross the lake until its shakedown cruise May 2. It will open to the public May 8, Mother's Day.

Ice-out typically occurs in April but was declared as late as May 12 in 1887. The earliest ice-out recorded was on March 29, 1921.
