That is remarkable; but long ago, the islands were logged for marketable softwood trees. The most difficult trees were located at the highest and rockiest elevations on Rattlesnake Island: that left
those White Pines beyond the axe.
Especially in Spring, the hardwoods come into their leaves in a much lighter color of green. So even in Summer—from The Broads—you can see where the White Pines "have made their stand".
