Default Better to wait.

We used to do the fireworks, Wolfeboro, Meredith and Alton depending on how far we were willing to travel back, but we would always try and wait until after many have left. Even in a large boat you can really get tossed around by the volume of wakes from the big boats.
Also remember the 25mph speed limit which they do tend to enforce more then the day time one.
I highly recommend a GPS as a backup because it all looks soooo different especially on a pitch black night.
Funny, we go to Maine now for all the holiday weekends to get away from the crowds who flock here to get away from there states. I hope they never put in a major highway to the Moosehead lakes region. The 4-5 hour drive from here keeps the crowds away.
