Of course it's about the money, amoung other things. Not to imply that's a bad thing.
The Lakes Region is primarily based on a tourist economy. To have an event that helps sustain that economy during the winter just makes sense. The fact that it is an event that many, many enjoy and make plans around makes it better.
History has shown that if an event like this loses momentum (or income) in any given year, it's chances of survival for the future dim. I have no problem with the event continuing. If the approprate warnings are given and appropriate modifications made (and I think they have been and will be), there is no reason why the event can't be held.
The organizers should not be held responsible for stupidity. Those who would ignore the warnings will do so at some point, whether with this event or not.
(I am not a fisherman nor have I ever attended the derby, so I don't have a vested interest here)
