For what my opinion is worth:
When I post coordinates to a wreck on Winni.com I have effectively released whatever control I had over it by not releasing them; The only protection I can give a wreck is by severely limiting who I give the Lat/Lon to-by controlling the release of this kind of information.
When I post the Lat/Lon I have given it a great deal of thought, first taking into account the wrecks' uniqueness, age, condition and what as a diver I believe would hold salvage value for other divers who would beat the crap out of them trying to say, pull off a rudder or bronze prop, cargo, steering wheel etc. etc..
I would like to share more locations I have but won't because some of them are just too special. However my close dive buddies on Winni-there are only 3-know where all of them are and I'm happy about that.
I understand the risks to a wreck by posting the Lat/Lon but as I've said it is not without great consideration. I decide that the risk to a particular wreck is nominal for various reasons and post it. That being said I think it's a great idea to work up a list of wrecks complete with Lat/Lon.
Map them if you like-you won't upset me in any way. I only say this because you expressed some concern about pissing off some in the dive community-trust me I'm not one of them-go for it. Contact me with questions if you like.
I would suggest reading carefully through posts I've made about wrecks because at first in some of them I didn't say where they were exactly but later posted the position. Therefore, if you're serious about building such a list and mapping it or whatever go through my posts end-to-end and there you will find coordinates that are not listed in the beginning parts of the thread. You can't tell I posted the Lat/Lon in a specific thread unless you read the whole thing. If there are "numbers" for a particular wreck you can't find that is in fact public somewhere let me know and I'll help.
That's worthwhile too because generally you will see side-scan images, photos and video clips of many of the wrecks I've found-what a great way to get an idea of what the wreck is all about.
I've found maybe 12 since May of this year, 20 or so in the last 3 years. Off the top of my head I have no idea how many are actually on Winni.com but alot of them are but all of them never will be. One new steel vessel 2 weeks ago. 2 flattened wrecks nearly side by side about 45 feet long each with cool brass screws and double-headed copper nails in them in July. One new possibility today. It just keeps getting better and I'm having a very good time. I will post pictures, scans etc. of them. Lat/Lon is another story.
I can't stop people from doing what they will do. I can only control giving them the opportunity to do it by sitting on certain wrecks.
