GILFORD, N.H. —Two men were sent to the hospital for burn injuries from a bob-house explosion on Lake Winnepesaukee in Gilford early Sunday morning.

Fire-Rescue responded to a 911 call just before 2 a.m. on Sunday. Crews arrived at Smith Cove on Varney Point Road and found the two injured men and melted debris from the bob-house.
According to the victims, the explosion occurred when one man was lighting a gas heater inside the house. The explosion blew one wall of the bob-house off. That wall landed nearly 15 feet away from the house.
One victim had significant burns to his forearms, legs, lips and forehead. That man was taken to Lakes Region General Hospital and later transported to a Boston hospital for treatment.
The other victim had minor burns to his head and face. He was treated at Lakes Region General Hospital.
Fire Chief Stephen Carrier said the men were lucky their injuries were not more severe.
He went on to say, "It points out that you can never be too careful. Many of the bob-houses on the lake have some type of heat source, and, whether it is wood or gas, if it is not used or installed correctly, it can create a hazard."
According to Carrier, there are no regulations or oversight for bob-house construction or use.
The State Fire Marshal's Office has been notified because the incident was an explosion and because of the severity of one of the injuries.
