Default Fire at Weirs Beach

From the Lake Winnipesaukee WeatherCam

Firefighters continue mopping up the Weirs Beach brush fire that went to 5 alarms today. Wind at Laconia Airport has shifted yet again, and is now blowing from the SE (as it is here.) Their wind is not as strong as ours on the water, thankfully. Theirs is sustained at 10 mph while ours is sustained at 24 gusting to 33 mph with 1-2 foot waves coming up the lake. Evening brings a lower sun angle and cooler temperatures as a result. That reduces relative humidity because the cooler temperature can't hold as much humidity and is therefore "more full" with the amount of moisture it's had. With less drying-power, the air is less favorable for fire growth (which is why a fire permit may say it's only valid at night.)

Relative humidity is up to 32 percent in Laconia now and will continue to rise as the temperature cools off for the night. Here on the lake we have relative humidity of 55% thanks to the air absorbing moisture from the lake surface.

Expect the wind to die down significantly within 2 hours after sunset. We have a clear night ahead -- good for viewing the meteor showers that have been going on.
