Don't feel dumb, Dave. At first I thought the same as you, that the antenna would have to be directly exposed to the sky. I was about to begin searching for the mounting hardware I'd need to mount it on the exterior of the boat, but just to see what would happen I tried putting it inside the glove compartment (which in our Sea Ray is very large) and to my surprise it accessed the satellites perfectly from there. So, it was kinda by accident that I stumbled onto this easy solution.
