I read an article by the NWS in response to why they weren't using the "officially" named winter storms.
They stated that the storms were not "officially" named like hurricanes are, that it was only the Weather Channel that was doing the naming, and that they felt the public understood when a bad storm was approaching and didn't need a name. Pretty good putdown to the Weather Channel, aka NBC reality channel number xx.
