You know, the twist this thread has taken, while certainly entertaining is scary. If you feel the urge to do something other than pay attention where your boat is going while underway, turn off the engine, or take down the sail and go to town, don't endanger the rest of us.

A few years ago I was sailing near Center Harbor on a light wind day when I noticed a large, ocean going, tug type, expensive yacht bearing down on me. The captain was about 3 feet from the wheel, with his back toward his direction of travel, talking to his guests. It looked like he had been in this position for a long time. I was not able to move out of his path, luckily I had a canned air horn and nearly emptied the can before who I assume was his wife stood up to look and told him he was getting close to hitting me. He adjusted course and missed me.

The big lake method of collision avoidance doesn't work, if you are under way pay attention.
