I think Wolfeboro would be a great place to get set up in. It seems by the way you wrote the post that you want to be accepted, yet want to have your privacy. You can have that in a town like Wolfeboro. It is a small town and people do gossip, you won't avoid that where ever you go. Tourists are just that, tourists; if you want to avoid them, just time your trips into town when they are sleeping or eating, they way the rest of the locals do.
I think it isn't about what you are/were, it is about what beneficial things you will or can bring to the town that will make or break whether you like it or not. By what you said about being involved in charities, etc. I think you will become a productive and good friend of the town. I hope you choose Wolfeboro!
