Well I can only tell you what I saw last year. I was boating out to Cow Island where I live and..... LO AND BEHOLD (I have this on videotape) I see a full grown female moose swimming from Com Island towards the mainland.... This was 4th of July weekend on a Friday afternoon so it wasn't like it was a quiet weekday or anything. Still one of the neatest things I have on tape.... My neighbor did not believe me until I said "oh wait a sec...." then I produced the tape... he watched it and said... "I'll be damned... I've been coming to the Island for 40 + years and I've never seen anything like that." So my answer is..... ANYTHING is possible..... It was probably a MOOSE. They swim!!!!
