I can't leave mine in the water. It is mounted to an aluminum frame that is about 10 feet beyond the end of my crib dock. Not enough winter depth to attach it to the dock.

Anyway I think keeping it upside down half the year to lubricate the seals, like the manufacturer recommends, is a reasonable idea.
