With the rear mounts designed to be "bottomed-out", the ¼" pin wouldn't be "in-shear", unless the tower was being pulled forward.

If there's any question to their strength, a solid pin could be used.
Even under that unlikely circumstance , the pin would likely be reusable, whereas the tower material would likely be torn. It's the two front hinges that would need to be "beefy".
