When you buy a suit, the jacket and pants go together and really don't usually go well when mixed and matched with other slacks.
Sport coats go extremely well with lots of different color slacks, khaki's and jeans giving you lots more bang for your buck and more opportunities to wear them, mix and match and get more use for your money.
A nice sport coat and slacks are perfectly acceptable for a wedding.
My 2 cents but I know that your wife or significant other may have last say in the decision.

This is all true.
I don't plan on doing anything that requires nice clothes other than:
Weddings
Funerals
Indictments
I'll wear the suit for the first two and avoid the last one.
