At camp, we nailed rubber strips to the posts. You can buy it at marinas in varying lengths. You don't have to re-set it when a different boat uses the dock or when lake level changes. Stays in place year round, lasts for years. At our marina, we tie four ways, still use a fender or two so we can tie a little closer on one side for easy on/off.
