The NH Boat Show...
If 150,000 people died of H1N1 then 5,000,000 people were infected given the 0.03% death rate. Potentially these numbers could be tripled. The high death rate associated with the coronavirus is skewed because of older people.
I don’t remember the same hysteria with any other pandemic. Last year 80,000 people in the U.S. died of the flu. It was an especially bad year. I don’t remember any news coverage about this. That’s because we understand the risk.
I’m not saying that individuals should not be vigilant in preventing the spread of coronavirus. They should. What I’m saying is that it is a complete overreaction driven by the media and social media.
I guess part of it is the unknown risk. However, coronaviruses have been around forever. This strain is different. Other types of risks we assume every day. For example, far more people (35,000) will die this year because of car accidents. We do not cancel events because people have to drive to them. That’s because we understand the risk.
If you’re relatively young and in good health there is very little to worry about.
