Haven't had one yet, and I'm talking going back to the mid-70s.... my parents had a cruiser in Wolfeboro back then, we used to keep it in the water until close to Christmas -- we used to spend T'day cruising the lake with the turkey roasting in the oven, oh what heaven!!!!!! Anyway, getting off topic with that reminiscence. Keep in mind the water is still warm relative to air temps, so maybe the water heats the air or something and keeps the engine from freezing? I definitely wouldn't "push the envelope", however, and take the chance of leaving the boat in the water too late!
