If it is the GPS version (with a red circle on the crown), it also has incredibly useful tech. Your hiking friend, just for example--could have "backtracked" to his starting point had he been lost, called 911 in an emergency, had EMT help arrive automatically if he had fallen, monitored his heart rate. Super good for an old guy like you.
I mocked the watch for years before being "forced" to buy one to monitor my exercise, now I love it. You might do a bit of Googling to see if a found watch can be reset for a new user. If yes, buy a charger and give it a go, or give it to a young relative. Note that when you plug it it, you may receive a message from the owner, and it may activate a homing signal. If that happens, you can return it to the guy and ask him to pay for the charger
