You likely can save yourself a lot of time (and money) if you have all the red tape paperwork done prior to hiring someone to do this project.

If your project is within 200 feet of the water then you will first need to have state approval for your project prior to applying to your city/town for a building permit. Your town's Building Inspector will supply you with all the correct forms needed to do this.

The project will be far easier for any Contractor if you have the regulatory process dealt with (this alone will save you money).
