These are really hard situations to work out well, for sure. A friend of mine had an old home that was in the family trust. The trust's money paid for everything, so that wasn't an issue, but once there was more than one generation of family involved, access, scheduling, etc. became contentious. Who gets holiday weeks? Only one family can use it in winter, so should the others get more time the rest of the year? We've got the money, but who's going to organize the fixes, bills, etc.?

My parents decided to put everything in a trust, including their camp, and all assets were split equally. If someone wanted an item—house, car, etc.—they paid fair market value out of their portion of the inheritance. This worked out well, and the people who really cared about the items got them...and the other siblings were glad for it.

I smile every time I see my brother driving Dad's Camaro convertible around town!
