California has only Black Bears, including brown-colored bears called "cinnamon bears".

Touring Yosemite National Park, my late spouse and I walked the pathway under a large rock-fall. The entrance could fit only two people. Somebody up ahead shouted, "There's a bear!"

Sure enough, a bear was trotting down-slope to our right, passing us only by two feet

Seeing the narrow entrance now blocked by two (different) startled tourists, the bear--now grunting loudly--wheeled around and ran back to wherever he came from. (Again, missing us by only 2 feet).
