Probably, people volunteer their time working at a thrift store because they have a lot of spare time and are a wee bit bored. Is ALWAYS better to be paid to work.

I know an 83-year old guy who used to own a car repair and tire business for 30+ years, and now he drives a car parts delivery for AutoZone Auto Parts in Worcester, Ma rather than stay home and be bored.
