I've also travelled to the lake on the Friday before a NASCAR weekend and found that the best route to avoid any race traffic is to take 495 to 95 and the Spaulding Tpke. to Route 11. Of course, I did get through the Hampton Tolls before noon having left NJ by 6:30 a.m.
I just returned from the lake yesterday and went home that route leaving Alton Bay at 10:30 a.m. I did see the M&M race team caravan on the Spaulding Tpke. in Dover, but that was the only NASCAR traffic I encountered. Made the 310 mile trip in 4 hours, 55 minutes a new record for me and never exceeded 68 mph. (I really appreciate cruise control). For anyone travelling south without a boat in tow, I found that taking 84 West to 91 South in East Hartford and then the Wilbur Cross (Route 15) to 287 in White Plains NY cut more than 10 miles from my trip and avoided the backups thru the construction in Waterbury, and NO TRUCKS!!
