As one who has towed more vessels than i care to remember DO NOT USE a rope with metal attachments at each end, this is a short cut to disaster. If I have a short tow or a tow in calm waters i do it broadside (that is alongside the towed vessel) with my transom aft of the towed vessels transom. this gives me precise steering control. If a long tow or in other than calm seas i use a quality 3 strand nylon line secured to adequate cleats/posts and a bridle on my boat. Just keep it slow, keep people out of the way and stay in communication with the towed vessel.
Read up on towing in Chapman's before you try it.
