Suggestion: obtain a folding luggage 2-wheel cart. Some can carry up to 200+ pounds; I am not suggesting groceries weigh so much. My point is some are very rugged; look for wheels 6" diameter to navigate rough sidewalks, and the extension handle is long enough to be comfortable. Also, then there are folding containers, which look like milk crates but about 50% larger and sort of nest so they stack very well; originally made to temporarily hold manila file folders with the hanging rods. I have several, but they are now hard to find.
However, I've seen similar products in boating supply catalogs, for this very purpose!
Removing shopping carts is illegal; besides they do not take to rough terrain.
In an effort to not use plastic bags, carry several good shoulder bags for your purchases, sort of like the canvas utility boating bags but with the loops long enough to go on one's shoulder! Be a little creative! Available for minimal costs at lots of grocery stores are many style bags.
