...that the corporate world decides what we want and don't want, and as a result you are hard placed to find "just a phone".

I use my phone mainly for telephone, and could care less about the camera. When it is time to replace, I usually will just go for one of those "free" phones that only takes a two year commitment which are as about as basic as you can get. Between my wife and I, we use the phone enough to have a plan, and share the minutes.
