1) Chipmunks get a bad rap: your damage was most likely inflicted by Red Squirrels—the teeth of which are "The Scourge of New England".
2) Since I've only experienced chipmunks in their native New Hampshire, I appreciate their habits. If I am so dense as to leave a birdseed container inside the front door, Chipmunks will attempt to chew the corner of the door to get to it. (Fortunately, they are extremely slow chewers).
Red Squirrels are the damage experts: they've even managed to damage an aluminum metal plate used to restore a 1¼" birdhouse opening
previously damaged by Red Squirrels!
3) My BIL didn't get the message to bring in our two wet-mops when closing up last year. Nothing much is left of those two mops (upper-right corner of photo), but the yarns did show up in two ratty Red Squirrel nests
under the cottage.
(Chipmunks only make neat burrows in the ground—they don't make ratty nests—yes, that is a White Pine seedling "in-training" centered in the same photograph).
4) "My" chipmunks come racing to a whistle—and one,
to his name! Also, they are very easy to feed by hand. (Photo 2)
