Maybe you could tell us what type of work you are looking for - administrative, trades, self-employment - or what you are currently doing for work.

You may get some good leads and information at Belknap County Economic Development Council.
Best of luck to you! Celia |

It's not the best place but Craigslist has some job listings. This post is based on my experiences and impressions from when I was 'on extended vacation' a few years back.
Avoid any listing that does not have the employer's name as the source. My experience is that the most they do is forward your resume to other listers they have gleaned from multilpe sources and try to charge you or the employer to make the connection. This is why many ads say 'no recruiters.' Don't bite on anything that says "go to this site to fill out a resume" unless it is the actual employer's on-line application. Especially don't provide Social Security numbers or financial info. Employers can no longer legaly ask for your date of birth until after you are hired. Phishing scams do though. any place that implies you need to pay for some training prior to employment is usually a scam. Temp agencies are a mixed bag. They can help you get a foot in the door and from that you might get a local reference even if you aren't hired permanently. After the first or 2nd 'assignment' they may stop referring you because they get a bonus for temps who get hired and if they get the impression (rightly or wrongly) that you are just an occasional worker they will give preference to the fresh-meat. Good luck! |

Is the real job search a Plan A....and your restaurant a Plan B...or just the opposite? Your's is an interesting situation. Perhaps you could get a chef/waiter type job in your restaurant til' you find real employment as your job search implies.

I believe the OP would love to move here and open a place of his own but is being a realist (that is no fun!!). I think those of us who live and vacation here know that the restaurant business is a tough one, especially in a seasonal vacation spot.
I would recommend that Skip Earth find employment here in the restaurant biz and then determine if his idea is viable. Frankly, a specialty restaurant faces an even harder battle. |

Took a stats course in college. Don't remember much, except what the prof said on the first day: "Welcome to Statistics 101. This is where you will learn to tell your side of the lie."
Back to your regularly scheduled program. ![]()

Directly off gov web site. All points mentioned above (specific industries and border hopping) are certainly affecting the stats. I am not aware of stats for specific fields or that exclude border hopping.

I agree. There are many desireable areas of the country that do not have a heavy industrial footprint for employment. The best are quite rural and are desireable, in large part, because of the lack of development and infastructure. I thing the lakes region would be less beautiful surrounded by automotive manufacturers, chemical plants, pharmaceutical manufacturers, shopping malls, parking lots, appartment buildings, etc.
My other house is in the monadnocks; a real nice area without the same employment opportunities of Boston or the likes. Urbanization is real. Daily convenience and easier access to employment is driving this much more than population growth, even with 7 billion of my clostest friends. Like you, I would love to live on the lake year round and have a convenient commute to a great paying job. |

Here is an income map of the US. Income variation seems to be the norm.
