Three marine patrol boats stood by while waiting for a Boston
whaler to stop doing circles....without an operator in the boat. This happened on the south side of Rattlesnake Island this afternoon. Boat has stopped. The operator that was ejected was picked up by good samaritan from shore. Thankfully nobody was hurt. I am going to use the safety lanyard from now on......... Dan |

The boat spiraled for a good hour at speed before it ran out of gas. Marine patrol decided to let it run its course rather than attempt to board it.
The operator is very lucky he/she managed to get out of the way before it started circling. A situation like that can end really badly. |

I talk to legislature about making lanyards necessary as the majority on new boats have them. They don't think it is necessary despite the few situations a year it could save valuable MP resources and god forbid a life!

Nope , don't need any more nanny state laws. We already have way too many. Ever hear a thing called FREEDOM??

A seatbelt would have prevented this, but in other cases might cause a drowning. Hope no one proposes a seatbelt law for boats.

I think the freedom card is overplayed on here to the point of silliness frankly.
Not wearing a lanyard is a risk to others, not just to youself. You only should have the freedom to put yourself at risk. I saw the incident and that boat could easily have injured those MPs or my kids. It is like drinking and driving. Do you also suggest that we shouldn't have drink driving laws because FREEDOM? |

Well said hig. I started using my lanyard when I'm in the boat alone after the first incident earlier this season. Its a pain in the neck as I'm always forgetting that I have it on when I go to tie up at the dock. Either I get hung up or it dislodges the switch and I have trouble starting the next time out. But I'll get used to it eventually. Maybe the marine patrol needs a catchy phrase as part of boater education to get the word out so other people will "Clip It".

http://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums/...ght=Autotether Since that time I have both of my boats setup for its use. Every time I test it, it has worked flawlessly. I Can't say enough good about it and I have absolutely no excuse for not wearing a tether now. You should look into one... Dan

A couple people fall out of boats and we need a new law? Don't thinks so. What is the incident rate compared to the number of boats on lake in the summer. Immaterial for sure. what do we know about the people that fell out? Were they licensed to drive? If the boat is running after they fall out doesn't that lead one to believe the left the controls with the boat in gear? Was the driver seated when operating if conditions were not great on the water? Laws imposed on responsible people for actions of the irresponsible are no deal. You know, kinda like gun laws.......but that's another topic for a different day.

My reason for supporting mandated tethers would be for safety of others and not the boater. If you want to use or not use a tether, that is your choice. I choose not to have me or mine run over by some jackass' boat because he fell out.

http://www.attwoodmarine.com/store/p...ll-switch-keys
...sells for about 8-dollars at the Gilford Wal-Mart. If it were up to me, even paddlers on kayaks and canoes would be required by law to have these lanyards attached to their paddles ..... nanny .... nanny ... nanny .... and make that the same for sailboat tiller handles ....u need to be hand-cuffed to the sailboat tiller handle, and have the handcuff key kept nearby in a breaka-the-glass safety key keeper ....nanny...nanny...nanny. Isn't New Hampshire the one and only state that does not require seatbelts be worn in cars, and it loses some 5-million dollars/year in federal highway money because of this..... no wonder the 4-mile long, Meredith Neck Rd is so dang pot-holed ...no one wants to pay to pave it....and they keep hoping the State of NH will change course and re-pave it....except nothing is happening.
