Hey guys,
I'm currently taking a writing course and my next assignment involves preparing a magazine article. My idea is "Lake Winnipesaukee Island Living". I think my general slant would be the pros and cons of having a place on an island. I'm looking for people to interview. Nothing formal. It could done on the phone or even through email. I think Rattlesnake Gal and Island Girl both are island dwellers (I guess their names gave them away-he he!-how smart am I?). Anyway, get back to me if anyone is interested. And I'll take any suggestions on different slants. Thanks for your time. P.S. Does this site have the ability to "Private Message" each other?

I cannot turn the private message feature on for some reason. It isn't just me, none of my computer literate guys can do it either. Old fashioned

I think I have found out how to send a private message.
I'm not sure if it will work or not! This is what I did: Went to the top of the page and clicked on where it reads private messages, then on the left hand side you will see, Inbox and send area. Click on send message and the post form opens up! I think all you have to do is enter the person or persons you want to send a private message and type in your message. I think that's all you have to do! Maybe there is someone you can try it out with and let us know if that works or if you want I could send you a private message and see if that works. Let me know, Ok? CEP |

That works if the recipient has allowed messages to be receives, which the originator of this thread has not.... unless I am missing something here.

Hi,
No, the questions aren't too personal. I just thought if I could paste a copy of my interview and email it to someone's private message box with enough space left for their answers it would be easier than trying to read everybody's responses on this thread. I know other replies might be added and it could get a little confusing. Is that too selfish of me to ask of everyone? Let me know. One person agreed so far, but I figure the more info I have the more thorough the article will be. Hopefully it will be good enough to be published.

I may as well have you guys write the article for me. I'm looking for a brief history of how/when island homes came to be. What were the islands used for before they were used for vacationing? I know Bear Island was used to graze cattle before there were trees on it. So I'm looking for that sort of information.
I'm going to check the library where I live (Milton, MA) but can't imagine there'd be a lot of literature on the lake. I'll check Meredith Public Library when I get up there but any books/sources that you guys know of would be of great help to me. And don't worry, I'll won't forget you when I'm a world famous writer.

NH State Library may be your best bet. Thats where I found the book Winnipesaukee, A Potpouri by E. Clarke that McDude featured on the history forum. The local lakes region libraries did not have it. The only thing is, if you want to check out a book I think you have to be a NH resident.

Not selfish at all jkjoshua tree. E-mail or Private Message away.
Bruce Heald's book from the Making of America Series, Lake Winnipesaukee has a lot of useful information. Everyone should pick up a copy, it is very enjoyable. ![]() ![]() The Tuck Library in Concord or the NH State Library are good places to go and poke around. They are convieniently located next to each other too! |

A book you might find helpful is Bear Island Reflections - Second Edition. It is the history of the island going back even before it was first settled in 1770. It has information on the Bear Island hotel, church, school, graveyard, camps and the development of summer homes. There are also many examples and anecdotes of island life.
I will lend you my copy if you pm me with an address. Or they might have a copy at the local library. |

First of all, thank you all for your overwhelming response. I've had six or seven people more than willing to be interviewed. So much thanks.
Secondly, Rattlesnake Gal, I tried to "Private Message" you and it said you don't accept them. Oh well. And BearIslander, I have a copy of "Reflections" (I'm a Bear Islander myself) but I haven't been up yet this year and it is currently sitting on my bookshelf there. But thank you for offering your copy to me and for the suggestion. Much appreciated.

Hi Jay:
I have a booklet that is part of a series called "Lake Country Gleanings" (?) which is part of a series published by J. Harland Whitcomb (?...don't have it right in front of me) published in Worcester, MA in 1923. This particular booklet has the early history of Davisville, now known as Governor's Island, as well as a list of most other islands and who they were granted to after the colonial governor (Wentworth) fled due to the revolution. I'm not sure if you want to go that far back, but if interested I could copy the booklet if you'd like and stick it in the mail. Drop me an e-mail if interested. McD PS - If you can get your hands on a copy of "The Gunstock Parish" by Adair Mulligan she does an extensive history of the Gilford islands. Perhaps the Gilford library or the Thompson-Ames Historical Society? Rattlesnake Gal, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:I have AIM or Private Messaging at Merrymeeting Lakes Forum or Wolfeboro Online. ![]() |

Hi McDude, I'm a little confused (what else is new?). Is the above email address yours? I would love to have a copy of the "Lake County Gleanings" booklet if it isn't too much trouble. You guys have been so great and I've gathered so much info in such a short time that I'm going to have to write a book and not just an article-he he! McDude, my address: Jay Keefe 2 Elm St. Milton, MA. 02186 Thanks again everyone!!

jkjoshuatree - I think you will probably receive more information for your project if you enable the Forum's email feature in the User Control Panel. You currently have that feature disabled, so no one can send you email.
To enable the email feature, click on "User CP" in the blue "task bar" near the top of the screen. Then click on "Edit Options", and in the "Message and Notification" box check the two boxes there that will allow the webmaster and other members to send you email. Then others can communicate with you directly. P.S. I don't think Webmaster Don has the Private Message feature turned on, but Email works fine if you enable it in the User Control Panel.

My email and private message features are now enabled.
Thanks McDude for sending that along. I need to pass the article into my teacher first and then we'll decide if its good enough to be published. I'm still trying to narrow it down to two or three magazines for submission. It may be a while yet but I promise to post it here with or without a magazine accepting it. Its my first attempt at publishing an article (I've had a poem published) so I'm hoping for the best. But I think I'll hold on to my day job...at least for a while.
