Spotted this beauty this morning; right across from the Holy Grail restaurant in Laconia. A 1910 Indian.

Looks like it might have been a Board Track Racer, although most of them I have seen were V Twins. They raced on board tracks similar to tracks used for bicycle racing..and roller derby's. They started out using 25 degree banked turns and eventually up to 60 degree banks. I think they were banned because they were killing riders and spectators alike.

You are correct it is a reproduction and it was built by a local man.

Apparently, building replicas of these old motorcycles is not uncommon.

SO: Why am i interested in old motorcycles..? First, I like mechanical things. Second, until recently, I owned an operating, and the only RI registered 1956 Ariel Square Four for over twenty five years.

I have learned something since my original post. I "thought" board track motorcycle racing was Indoors...like bicycle racing..roller derby...etc.
Totally NOT SO. Board Track Motorcycle racing was like...Daytona Beach..The track was over a mile in length....ALL 2x4 boards layed on edge....outdoors, and banked....except instead of asphalt as today..they had boards. If you think about it..this is 1910..1920. There are no Paved roads...never mind paved racetracks. So they used boards to..."surface" the tracks. Better than dirt. This explains the 100 MPH speeds they achieved. ![]() For those interested: Go to U-Tube and plug in "Board Track Motorcycle Racing"...or something like that..It will come up. |

Here is one with Indian motorcycles. Apparently there was one of these tracks in Salem NH. Some of these tracks had turns with up to 60 degree banks!

My great uncle Charlie with his Pierce Arrow. Unfortunately both were gone by the time I was born.

There was a board track here in Nutley, New Jersey where they raced bicycles and midget racers. The track was a killer. One driver lost control sending the car into the catch fence. His head caught the fence and he was decapitated. The car came down on the track still running and continued to circle the track. This lead to the end of racing in Nutley. The little number 23 up high is my grandfathers friend Johnny Ritter in an ELTO (Evinrude) powered midget.
