Saturday morning, July 31, Ashland Town Beach, Little Squam Lake, located about 2.7 miles down Route 25 from Route 93-exit 24, just over the somewhat hidden covered wood bridge, and across from Riveredge Marina, in Ashland, NH; the Ashland Town Beach will be the starting point as well as the finish for this first time Poker Paddle event!
"The Ashland Parks and Recreation Dept is sponsoring a new event this summer, the "Hope It Floats" Canoe and Kayak Poker Run, on Saturday, July 31. Registration for the event begins at 7:30 a.m, with a fee of $10 for each boat. Starting times for the poker run will be from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Participants will paddle around Little Squam Lake, stopping at four locations to pick up a playing card, and then the fifth card on their return to the town beach. The best poker hands will win prizes. The grand prize will be a new Potomac solo kayak, donated by Dick's Sporting Goods of Concord. Prizes will also be awarded for the best poker hand in four different boat categories - single kayak, double kayak, single paddler canoe and multi-paddler canoe. Prizes include gift certificates from the Common Man restaurant, Riverside Dairy Joy, Riveredge Marina and More Than Movies, an inflatable tube from Ash True Value Hardware, and items donated by Meredith Village Savings Bank and hopefully other businesses. (JD Printing donated advertising banners.) There will also be a 50/50 raffle open to anyone at $5 per ticket. Proceeds from the event will benefit Ashland Parks & Recreation programs. For more information, call Jim Gleich at 968-9209." Thanks to the Plymouth Record Enterprise, Talk of the Town information column, this could be a well attended paddle event depending on the weather and just might prompt a lot of paddlers to show up. If you have never seen the Ashland Town Beach on Little Squam Lake, it's a large sandy waterfront area with a large swimming area and off-shore raft. So, how long is the planned paddle route that presumably goes around Little Squam Lake? I do not know? Anybody on-board know? For a lake that has a first name of Little, that there Little Squam Lake is definately not very little. But...... what-me-worry?.......just keep-on-a-paddling.......and eventually you get back to the beach.........or something like that! Have to wonder if either the Common Man or the very nearby Riverside Dairy Joy will be sending a mobile supply canteen vehicle stocked up with all their eat'n goodies for all the hungry paddlers to purchase? Just something to focus on while out there a-paddl'n away! Nothing beats a chiliburger w/ sauerkraut on pumperknickle after a long paddle!
