Default A Friendly Reminder

I'm sure everyone is aware of this but I just wanted to pass on the reminder I received from my flag company...

"Sunday, September 11, 2011, all U.S. Flags should be at half-staff from sunrise to sunset in memory of the 2,993 Americans lost in the September 11th attacks in 2001.

All Americans are asked to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46AM EST, the time in which the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center that fateful day."

Care to elaborate on that instead of this "hit and run" one liner??...

This post was about flying the AMERICAN FLAG at half mast to honor those Americans who died. I am well aware that there were foreigners who also died and I would presume that their respective countries would also honor them by doing the same or by whatever their standard traditions are. My post was by no means meant to disrespect those foreign traditions.

Our traditions as US citizens is to honor our home country men and women by placing our flags at half mast by order of the President and only the President in remembrance of those who died.

I truly hope you do not take issue with that...

2529 Americans died; 209 people who died were of other nationalities representing more than 40 nations. I mourn for all the people who died that day and especially my fellow countrymen who I will honor with an American flag flying at half mast.

Let me respectfully correct you Cate..."more than 70 countries lost citizens in the attacks on the World Trade Center alone".

We all mourn for all of the dead that occurred on 911.

My initial post was about US Flag etiquette and a reminder on how to respectfully fly our flag on this 10 year anniversary. We owe that respect to our living, our dead and our flag.

Thank you;

Dan

A friendly flag etiquette reminder:

When flying the American flag at half-staff, it should first be raised all the way to the top of the staff for a moment, and then respectfully lowered to the half-staff position. When the flag is being taken down from the half-staff position, it should first be raised to the top of the staff for a moment, and then respectfully lowered and properly folded.

Default Listen Up Men

For those of you on this forum who have never Served in the Military...The FLAG is displayed (daylight) from 0800 (8:00 AM) Local..to Sunset...NOT Sunrise to Sunset.

On every Military Base, Ship, Airfield, in the World..the "Colors" are raised in a ceremony at 0800 in the morning and retired at Sunset. It's called "Colors"

There are exceptions. Wiki it. NB

Thank you, ishot308 for the reminder and info. I also appreciate Kate clarifying her comment - and I appreciate her heart in reminding us that it wasn't all Americans who lost their lives that tragic day. NYC is the heart of our country and the first place most immigrants came to our country, so the little fact she shared with us only makes sense.
