The white inn building from the early 1980's Bob Newhart tv show opening scene is still there today, looking the same white color, and is located in downtown Center Sandwich, NH. Just about every building along the street is painted white.

The shot of the boat being steered into shore from On Golden Pond is where Big Squam Lake comes very close to Rt 25 in Holderness, along a piece of public highway access land that abutts the waterfront, a little bit west of the Squam Lake Sailing Association facility www.squamlakes.org/ and about one mile east of the Citgo convenience store.

Actually the Inn shown at the beginning of The Newhart Show was, according to Vermont Life Magazine, the Waybury Inn in Middlebury Vermont. See below:

Middlebury, Vermont and Hollywood, California - A rather unlikely match but, as fate would have it, this authentic New England stagecoach inn from the 18th century was just what the director wanted for television's 'Newhart.' It's the look of this unique property that Hollywood was after, but it's the Inn's charm and character you will most admire.

The television show, which aired on CBS from 1982 to 1990, was a big success and the Waybury Inn received world-wide recognition and notoriety because of the exposure. The fame continues even today, a decade after the show's final production. Travelers and tourists often ask, "where is the inn that was featured on that television show 'Newhart?'" The show was not only a success for CBS, but for realtors, innkeepers, and Vermont tourism in general.

When my family and I lived in Rutland, we'd go to the Waybury Inn for many special occasions.

The opening sequence consists of b-roll from the 1981 film On Golden Pond, meaning that the scenes shown are of New Hampshire, not Vermont.

But more specifically IMDb says
Exterior scenes of the Stratford Inn were those of the Waybury Inn in Vermont.

and

The opening credits are outtakes of On Golden Pond (1981). If you look closely you can see Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn in the car.

Vermont residents complained that the opening scenes are of New Hampshire, and not Vermont.

Since my aunt and uncle lived in the town next to Middlebury, Vermont, I can authoritatively say that the Waybury Inn was used for the exterior shot on the Newhart TV show, and I have, like Janet, dined there. The inside shots were perhaps based on something else because the Newhart inside shots are completely different from what the Waybury Inn looks like inside. I believe the producer's name of the Newhart Show was Barry Kemp and he actually stayed at the Inn, and was so taken with the exterior that he asked for permission to photograph it and use it. The outtakes from the movie "On Golden Pond" - with Henry and Katherine driving to "Golden Pond" and turning around about traffic signs were taken in Sandwich by the movie people, and Barry received permission to use them. Actually, not only were some Vermonters somewhat peeved that the road pictures were taken in NH but also by the characterizations of Vermonters in the show. Even so, I loved the show, and my favorites were Dick, of course, and Larry, Darryl and Darryl. Can't tell you how many times we used that punch line at family gatherings. I also loved the ending of the show when it went off the air.

Getting slightly off the subject, here's some trivia questions with respect to the director of "On Golden Pond," Mark Rydell; the movie, "OGP"; and Katherine Hepburn and Henry Fonda:

1. What television soap opera was Mark Rydell on as an actor before he became a director, what part did he play, and who was his partner as one of television soap opera's first super couples - i.e, her name and who played her?

2. What local Lakes Region farm market did Katherine Hepburn go to to purchase vegetables? What vegetable did the owner save for her specially - because of its smaller size and not too pretty an appearance and most of all, because it didn't cost as much (a plus in Katherine's book being the thrifty Yankee that she was!)

3. The hat Henry Fonda wore in the movie was given to him by whom, and who did it originally belong to?

4. What Connecticut town did Katherine Hepburn have a house in and what was the name of the house?

When they were filming On Golden Pond I was a waitress at Hart's Turkey Farm. The rumor at the time was that when Jane Fonda came in to the restaurant she asked for hot water and then she placed her own tea bag in the water. Maybe it was a special tea????

The American Stage Festival in Milford NH was doing "On Golden Pond" the summer that the filming was going on. Two seats were left open and waiting for any cast members who might make the trip to see the play. They never made it to Milford and the seats remained unused for what was likely 24 performances. Probably an effective publicity stunt to fill the other seats.

Yup, the shots of Sandwich come in at 0:43 and it shows the general store on the left and what I remember as Denley Emerson's office in the big white building on the right. I spent a fair amount of time in that old store when I was a kid. I can still clearly remember reaching into the icy cold water of the old soda cooler and getting a birch beer. I still like birch beer but somehow they tasted much better back then.

The only answer I know is #4. Hepburn had a house in Old Saybrook CT (on the shore) called Fenwick.

Wasn't that house destroyed in 1938 by a Hurricane??? I seem to remember hearing that she lost most of her belongings in that storm and almost lost her life.

I used to love Hart's Turkey farm. Whenever we stayed in the area we always made a point to eat there! I haven't been there in 20 years, is it still there??? Has it changed much???

I also loved the "Newhart" show. I grew up in the Worcester and always wanted to live somewhere where life was so much more simple. Of coarse no matter where you are life is never simple but, oh it was such a great place to escape "progress" and live the simple life. I visited the Waybury Inn in E. Middlebury, VT and it was a very nice place. Granted the inside looked nothing like the "Stratford Inn". The outside had also changed a lot since those exterior scenes were shot but you could still tell it was the same place. Going to the intersection of Grove & Skinner Streets of Sandwich New Hampshire was a big disappointment. All the trees with few exceptions were gone, the Sandwich Country Store was for sale and the area did not look like it did 30 years ago. As I said, if you are into nostalgia, progress sometimes sucks!

I think most people would say that Hart's has not changed all that much. Some don't care for it but it is one of my favorites. If you liked it 20 years ago you are likely to still like it now.

I know of two! The first is in Worcester, MA & it is called "George's Coney Island". If you happen to like hotdogs, you will find none better than here! George's has been open since 1918 and is a Worcester icon! Just order two "UP" and be absolutely amazed!

The other is in North Smithfield, RI, so if you ever get down there, go to "Wright's Chicken Farm". Yes I know, sounds a lot like "Hart's Turkey Farm"! LOL. At Wright's you pay one low price per person and they just keep bringing the food. Broasted Chicken so good it falls off the bone when you pick it up. Fresh baked dinner rolls, house salad with their own salad dressing that they sell in area super markets and it is very popular! They also bring pasta and their own sauce. The entire "chicken" menu is "All you can eat"! Drinks are extra and they do have 4 fully stocked bars. This restaurant is so large that they seat 1023 people in 5 dinning rooms all at the same time!. That is NO exaggeration!

The hotdogs at George's sell for $1.50 per. Or at least they did last year when I was down that way. But, I can promise you this, if you eat one, you will eat 5. I am not big on hotdogs usually I will eat two. But, When I go to George's I have in the past been know to eat 10. Yes ten, no exageration! They do have other things on the menu as well. Damned if I ever knew what they were though!!! LOL

It's been two years since I've been to Wrights but, it was $10.50 for the Chicken dinner and drinks were extra. The meal consists of Chicken, chicken & more chicken... Fresh dinner rolls, French Fries, House Salad and house pasta sauce on shells. All you can eat for that one price and it is oh so good! I assume it costs a little more now, maybe $11.50 - $12.00 now. It is well worth the price!
