Catamaran Capsizes

Channel 9 is reporting that a Catamaran capsized off Diamond Island today and the MP rescued people from the water. Nothing on their web site right now. They said more at 11:00.

It is really good to see that they were well prepared which led to the good outcome.
So many times we see people rescued that were not prepared to be in a situation.

I was at LSP waiting on the moonrise when I spotted the MP's with the Catamaran in tow. They followed across the water between Diamond and the shore. Then they hooked it up and took it to shore.

Long Shots so not to clear. It was very rough out there. I think it was a one man operation.

i had to do that last year, same area. me and my neighbor were out fishin by rattlesnake. nasty, windy day with 4 and 5 foot swells. not many boats out. we were just about to head in actually. i saw a small sail boat out to the east, a little while later it was gone. didn't think much of it at the time, figured it had just gone out of sight. i turned the boat around to start trolling the other way heading back toward glendale and after a couple hundred yards i could see something white out in the middle of the lake. we pulled up the lines and headed over there. the sail boat was capsized and the guy was in the water yelling for help and waving his arms. i motored over to him, tossed him a line to attach to his sail boat, and hoisted him up into mine. good thing he had a pfd on, he was in the water for a while. he was really cold too so i gave him a jacket i had on board. ended up towing his boat into winter harbor. from there his dad came out and helped him flip it right side up and get it home. i had to then scoot back across the lake to glendale from winter harbor. what a rough, wet ride that was! and i was almost outta gas! made it back fine, just wet and cold.

before i got over to him, i was amazed to see 2 other boats zip right by the guy within 100 yards of him and not stop. i could hear him yelling and see him waving at them but they kept on going. they had to have seen him at least..

that was quite a day... we caught a ton of fish that day too including a personal best salmon for my neighbor. that day also brought me to a decision too.. i needed a bigger boat. that one run from winter harbor to the glendale launch made up my mind. it was brutal. we couldn't have been any wetter if we jumped in the lake. we were soaked, and i mean totally soaked. the waves were huge for my 16.5 ft side console deep v boat and the wind was blowing the water right into the boat and onto us. i put the boat up for sale that week.

I'm surprise to see the marine patrol towing the boat. I heard a number of times that the marine patrol will tell you to call the marina or Sea Tow for a tow. In fact, I was with a boat that was hydro locked and smashing up into the beach next to Harra's Landing. Someone called the marine patrol and he basically stand by until Sea Tow came to the rescue. The boat suffered considerable damage from the wave actions on the beach.

Short by about a foot and a half. A small boat is a lot of fun and easy to use, but you better pay attention to the forecasted wind speed and direction.

absolutely. that was one of those days that started off pretty nice at sunrise, but by 9am it started gettin pretty windy. i had planned to hug the western shoreline like i usually would on windy days for the ride back but the detour to winter harbor kinda ruined that idea

I'm surprised too. Our son was out in his boat one day and broke down and MP told him they don't tow. Guess they do sometimes...

They may be the only ones on the lake this early in the season capable of towing.

SIKSUKR as for no PFD, have you ever used a dry suit? It will keep you afloat a lot better then a PFD, providing there are no leaks. Even a good quality wet suit will keep you at water level without weights to bring you down.

Sage advice. I've posted several times that my 16.5 Lund is what I would consider bare minimum (by my risk aversion rating) for getting on the Broads with anything more than a 10 mph wind. I certainly have been out there in more but got quite wet and was regretting being out there. Crested one way at little more than headway speed only to have my bow submarine into the following wave and take gallons of water over the bow (on the way in). Its amazing how quickly the lake can turn ugly. I always check the forecast and plan where I will be based on wind...the forecast sometimes has surprises. When the water is below 60...I take no chances.

I'm guessing MP helped because: 1.) they had to get the guy out of the water and 2.) the cat was a navigational hazard off shore like that. If it were pounding against the shoreline of Rattlesnake....it would probably have been left for Sea Tow. (or MP knew the guy).

Probably, your Lund is just a little bit bigger than my Alumacraft 16' x 72" wide x 40-hp-side steer, and that is a very fun little boat for Winnipesaukee.....probably just a tad too small for the bigger areas of the lake......sort of like riding a surfboard out there, or somethin, when the waves turn to white caps.....but it sure gives u a feel'n be'n closer to the water than u get with the bigger boaties .....

I agree with both of you. I love my Lund too. Best made "tin" boat out there. A smaller boat really does add to the boating experience. You become much more aware of slight changes in the air and water.
