Most excellent. Thanks for posting.
Was it mandatory to wave at the camera back then? Irwin's sure had quite an operation going there, even bringing in the boats by rail...nice! |

Nice videos.
I'm curious why the captains controls went from the left side of boats, like in the videos , to the right side of boats on today's boats. Anyone know why ? |

It also had to do with engine torque effect. Twin engine boats will have one prop rotating clockwise and the other prop will rotate counter-clockwise..cancelling out the torque. Single engined boats tend to lean to one side (torque effect)..like a "List" while underway at speed..so the Solo drivers weight is located on the opposite side of the boat to counteract the lean. ![]() |

Great to watch! I really enjoy seeing the old wooden Chris-Crafts back in the day. Isn't it amazing looking at the quality of those 50 to 60 year old home movies what can be done today with even a cell phone video.

Thanks chasedawg! The first 15 seconds of the first video made it for me.
My brother and I restored the same Chris Craft model shown there when I graduated from college. We ran it on Merrymeeting for many years, but finally sold it when the kids started arriving and we no longer had the time to devote to the maintenance required. We still miss it! |

This Torque Effect is particularly noticeable in single engine airplanes...from today's Cessna... to the P-47 Thunderbolt of WWII fame.
On takeoff..when you Add Power..you need to ADD RIGHT Rudder to counteract the tendency of the plane to Veer Off the runway to the left. ![]() Last edited by NoBozo; 01-18-2014 at 07:38 PM. |

In the case of the 2300 HP P-47 Thunderbolt (Fighter) of WWII...If you added throttle Too Fast... OR Too soon, On takeoff..you could roll the plane off the runway onto it's back..... "Ding Bang Ow". NB
PS: A Cessna 172 @160HP will also veer off the runway if you don't add some right rudder at takeoff. |

Thanks for the video, Chasedawg. What were they doing at minute 1:30? It looked odd to have a boat and trailer down on the ice. Or was it beside the ice and not on it?

Thanks for posting. My father bought a new 1950 CC Express cruiser from Irwin. Special order with a hardtop. In the 60's for a couple of summers I drove the "Winni's". Over the years, we bought 5 Chris-Crafts from Irwin, and now we're on our third Sea Ray. Good people to do business with, and huge supporters of all that is positive about our lake.
