Dave Roberts (dcr)

Dave Roberts, well known as "dcr" on the forum, passed away on March 29, 2017.

Dave was a valued member of the forum, both for his written contributions and for the more than 1,400 beautiful photos he posted in the PhotoPost section of the site.

An avid hiker and mountain climber, Dave posted many, many photos of mountain scenes for the enjoyment and education of the forum viewers. In many of his photos, he labeled each mountain peak for the benefit of the viewers.

Besides on the Forum, I got to know Dave from my work. I enjoyed talking with him and sometimes just picking his mind with questions. He was a wealth of information.
Besides being a wealth of knowledge and an educator, he was a great protector of our environment and our natural resources.
Rest in peace, Dave Roberts.

Dave spent decades exploring the Belknap Range, marking existing trails, blazing new trails and marking the position of numerous natural and historic features. Using early GPS technology Dave generated the 1st hiking maps of the Range. There were several in the series of which we have three. Current maps of the Range are basically updates of Dave's maps:

Dave was a founding member/director of the Belknap Range Conservation Coalition:

Dave played a key role in the Mt. Major land conservation effort by purchasing, with his own funds, the parcel at the trail head. A developer had made an offer on the land and Dave stepped in. The parcel was later transference to the Forest Society.

I last talked to Dave about 4 weeks ago asking about the history of Pine Mt. also known as Alton Mt. He still had his stacks of info right nearby.

Dave was always very modest, quick to shy away from taking credit for his wonderful work. I, as with many others, will miss the man.

A long time ago I asked Dave what prompted his spending a lot of time exploring the Belknap Range. He told me that his "family" had a place on the lake back then but that he did not enjoy the lake house activities all that much. Being a teacher he had time in the summer and set out to explore the range. He spent most of his summer days doing that. Much to the benefit of all that were to follow.

He did not say where the family lake house was or even if they were named Roberts.

i've learned so much about the geography and topography of the region, mostly from his posts and maps. He spent a lot of time in his life in the Merrymeeting region. His knowledge of the region, and his dignified manner, will be sorely missed.

You know, after reading this thread and looking at the photo again, I'm fairly certain I met Dave while hiking with my son on the waterfall trail on the Castle in the Clouds property. For those who knew him, does it make sense that he'd be doing volunteer trail maintenance in that area?

Absolutely! He was a member of the LRCT and took great pride in keeping all areas he hiked as pristine as possible.

I'm glad I had the opportunity to walk with him--he was incredibly generous with his time and knowledge, and he clearly found joy in joining my (six-year-old) son and me for part of our hike.

Dave did have an involvement with the castle, I believe that he served as a land steward for a while.

Slickcraft, in the article linked in post #19, Dave mentioned his family camp in W. Alton.

I have to admit I use to spend a lot of time on the lake in my early years. In the last decade I have been devoting most of my time in the Belknap Range especially after the family farm became part of the Belknap conservatory trust. The serenity of the mountain far beats the craziness on the water.
