Saw a pair of loons close to my shore and one seemed to be struggling with something. It's head was under water and seemed to be in distress. I assumed the worse ...caught in fishing line or some kind of trap but suddenly it raised it's head and it was trying to swallow a large fish. The fish looked to be 10' to 12' long and girth seemed to be bigger than the loons head but somehow it got it down.
I always thought they only caught smelt and other small bait fish.

At ten to twelve feet long, it was possibly the Winnipesaukee Monster.

I've got an old picture of a Loon struggling with a 2-pound Bass. Not built to cut into its fish prey, most of its attacking was by stabbing at the prey. I watched patiently for a very long time, but never saw the meal disappear.

On another occasion, a Loon popped up a foot from my canoe, with a 1-pound Bass.

On most other encounters, Loons pop up directly in front of my sailboat. Most of the time, Loons will dive when seeing my sailboat, but you'd think while submerged, Loons could see a boat approaching from only a few feet away. IDK...
