You are completely right. With the ice cream shop there, often it's children sitting on that bench. I hope they report on the cause to give us comfort it won't happen again.

concern is but in the real world, “they” whomever that may be, cannot give “us” comfort that a spontaneous, incident/potential tragedy “won’t happen again.”
My suggestion: be aware of your surroundings and expect at all times that something bad can happen in a heartbeat, especially in today’s dangerous world.

It's pretty hard to be aware of a vehicle heading toward you when sitting on a bench with your back to it.
I guess you could wear a helmet with a rearview mirror on it like some bicycle riders do.

Unfortunately ____ happens! No one can prevent accidents from happening. In the final analysis each individual, not big brother, is responsible for themselves. It may not always be enough, but that’s all we got.

There are absolutely NO guarantees that is will not happen again. Isn't that why they are called "accidents"? There can be education and precautions but you certainly cannot say that this will not happens again

I didn't realize my comment would provoke such emotion!

I do believe it's helpful to think about how a tragedy could be avoided. Ask yourself: if a child had been killed, would you have the same "accidents happen" response? Would you advocate doing nothing?

I've seen it happen at a store in Mass, Luckily again no one was hurt but it was crazy, The guy got held up on a curb, thankfully and was shifting from drive to reverse stomping on the gas in both directions in a panic, I wanted to drag him out of the car. Off course it was a big Oldsmobile, aptly named, That would have been a torpedo if he got it "un stuck". Hopefully we'll all get old, I'm getting there myself, but it's a deadly mistake.

.....did you ever notice, whenever a car crashes into a house, building, etc, and the reason given is "the accelerator stuck", the driver is just about always someone in their 70's, 80's, & beyond? I've never heard of an accelerator sticking for someone in their 30's-50's....

I was on the Vineyard with six friends shortly after that happened. We rented mopeds and covered most of the island. At some point during the day we took the "On Time" ferry to Chappaquiddick. When we got to the "Dyke Bridge" there was a hand written sign that read "Teddy's Car wash".

What you consider to be 'aware' is error. These are the least dangerous times we live in. Accidental death and disease overwhelmed the 20th century. The last 45 years in the U.S. is the most peaceful we've enjoyed in over 125 years. Pushing hyper-vigilance is not the same as staying aware, unless you believe awareness and knowledge are 2 totally different concepts.

Had a friends whos mom and dad were involved with one of those Toyotas with the defective gas pedal crashes. Sadly she lost her life and he spent months in the hospital after going through a rotary getting off the highway. Sad I still remember getting that phone call.

After that I made sure everyone in my family knew to put the car in neutral, use the E break or any other possible options depending on the scenario. Blow the engine/trans up I don't care they can be replaced, someone's mom, dad or child cant be.

Baffles me that people can make this mistake, especially around a dock, or in this case off of one.
