There is the "Wishing Bridge" between between Birch and Steamboat. It was built in the 1930s and I heard somewhere that it's all still the original wood.

Funny, most people just know and think of the three majors and forget about the others, although with Christmas Isl., isn't that more of a causeway than an actual bridge?

I'm sorry, but if you drive your car to your place, you don't live on an island!

Channel Cottages (just after you enter Paugus Bay) boasts of an island on their property connected to the main land by a foot bridge.
Probably the only island from which a drive in movie can be seen! ![]() |

Root Beer is not beer.
Hamburgers have no ham in them. "bridged islands" are not islands. People who live on bridged islands are not islanders (sorry, but it's true). |

But what if it is a drawbridge? Up an island, down not?

One Mile Island in Center Harbor once had a bridge from the mainland to the island. The stone abutments are there on either side but the center span is missing.

Thanks Skip!
So Bear Island is the largest island on Winni. However I have walked and skied to the island and one of my neighbors arrives by helicopter. It wouldn't be hard to swim from the mainland either. Seems like they could have phrased that better. |

"VII. “Island” is defined as a land mass totally surrounded by water and reachable only by boat."
So what is the state approved pc term for all the other land masses in the middle of the lake?

As defined by MW:
Main Entry: 1is·land Pronunciation: 'I-l&nd Function: noun Usage: often attributive Etymology: alteration (influenced by Anglo-French isle) of earlier iland, from Middle English, from Old English Igland (akin to Old Norse eyland), from Ig island (akin to Old English Ea river, Latin aqua water) + land land 1 : a tract of land surrounded by water and smaller than a continent You'all are looking at it figuratively, I am looking at it literally. As much as I am able to enjoy "true" island life from time-to-time, and I know it is taken very seriously by those of you that live on them... an island is an island, bridge or no bridge. ![]() ![]() |
