I suppose this could go in the history section and would be totally okay if it got moved, but I wanted the most people possible to see it find out if anyone has ever seen what I found.
My grandparents and now my parents have owned a camp on Echo Point since the 1920's. It has only been fixed up once, if you can believe that. Anyway, we were in the house last week (we were staying elsewhere) as I had told my boys about some envelopes with 2 cent stamps on them and they wanted to see them. In the letter box with the envelopes were two maps from 1949. My parents had never seen them and have no idea where they came from. Map A is labelled: Lake Winnipesaukee Study, Existing Conditions. It shows the entire lake with the developed areas in orange with little boxes for the houses, undeveloped areas in green (and there were lots including ALL of Rattlesnake Island) and camps in purple. There was only one area which could not be developed over by Meredith/Center Harbor. Many road with which I am familiar did not exist including the highway portion of Route 28 between the Alton Circle and the end of what is now called 28A. IT was Route 28. Map B is identical to Map A except that the colored areas are lighter and markings for public development are added. For example, the area where Ellacoya is now is listed for development as a swimming and camping area. It also had a marking for a public launch on Echo Point. (Yikes!). I am attaching a scan of the Alton Bay portion of the map. The maps were enormous (about 3.5 feet for 4.5 feet) so I couldn't scan the whole thing. Has anyone any information on these things? My mom is dying to know. Thanks! nj2nh

I think that is the map my father used to say this is the area the Puddy-Tat was allowed to roam. This 11'6" boat roamed the lake from June 17, 1957 until October 1970 While this area was supposed to be a restricted area for the Puddy-Tat, it was often found at the weirs, and even paugus bay. Restrictions??? It even payed a visit or two per year to lees mills. LOL by the way the mount always whistled at us at Echo Point.
Nice Map,. Looks like a marking of our cottage on it as well! |

Pineneedles,
I would love to oblige you, but I sent the maps to my parents in Massachusetts yesterday per their strict instructions. I am sure they will find their way back into my hands eventually as I am the keeper of all this stuff anyway. nj2nh

There seems to be a couple of reasons for the Toot at Echo Point now-a-days, one is that the capt has family nearby, and the other reason that I heard is to warn the dock that they are coming, I kind of don't think that part is true as it is pretty far from the dock, and you can almost set a clock on their timing.
It isn't my boat he toots at any more, I very rarely chase the mount since they lengthened it and took the big waves away. But I always go out and wave at the people on the boat. |

I believe that toot you refer to, would be caused by the family on Echo Point in the Tan colored home that comes out to the deck and waves the flag as the Mount Passes. There is also an older couple on the opposite side of the bay a little further down that live in a Red House that wave from the porch. The toot as you call it is also referred to as the Friendly Whistle, Not to be confused with a blast of the Ships Horn, which is for signal purposes!

As a kid I remember all my cousins, aunts, uncles would stand on the dock as the Mount got close to us and we would yell "Blow your horn!" In most cases the Captain would oblige us by giving the signature horn for entering Center Harbor right in front of our dock. It's arbitrary where he signals from as I have seen him do it as early as after passing Little One Mile and as late as when he was in the middle of 1/2 mile's islands. Today, he will give a toot on the Friendly Whistle as FBB says, if you wave and yell greetings.
I also have the honor, as far as I know, the only person who's Golden Retriever received a warning horn blast when the dumb dog went out to "retrieve" the mount. Not dumb perhaps, but he definitely had a high opinion of what he thought he could retrieve. ![]() |

. . . could we get back to the maps? Has anyone ever seen anything like this before?
As for the Mount and the tooting, the couple that owned the house before my parents told them that the captain was friends with a family on Echo Point and that he would bring the Mount down there on evening cruises (they had to go somewhere, after all). We would see the Mount on some Saturday nights. Everyone would blink their spotlights and the Mount would blink back. We didn't see the Mount any evening this year, though. nj2nh

Sorry, nj2nh. Got a little carried away but I have not been able to locate a map that looks like yours. However, if anyone might have an idea it might be these people in Dover, NH. They seem to have alot of old maps of Winnie on sale. Good luck.

Rose:
The map you are referring to is an old Boston and Maine Railroad map that I have hanging in my office at work. It can be found at many places around the lake (Black's and the Art Place in Wolfeboro used to carry them) and can be had for a lot less than $233.75!! It is a really nice piece....suitable for framing! McD |

We have another map on the wall at our camp that has been there for my entire life. Wish I would think to take a picture of it and share. We also have an old copy of the one Rose talked about, but I don't know if that one is original or not. Isn't that the mape in the middle of the Weirs Times newspaper?
There I go, highjacking my own thread!!!! LOL nj2nh

This was on our wall since the 30's and I took it down and made color copies and sent them to all my relatives as a present.

Hey, no problem. I have always loved maps and enjoy hearing about and seeing other old maps of the lake. I have concluded that the two I found shall forever remain a mystery unless I hoof it over to the historical society in the Weirs (near Funspot) and make inquiries. Hard to do from Jersey, though. Should have done it while we were there.
I also have quite a few of those souvenir folders. You know the ones - the kind that open up and there are lots of postcards folded into an accordian. Got them all on Ebay. I also got a couple of really old books, filled with black and white photos of the lake and another of the white mountains. All from Ebay. nj2nh

Well you should talk with McDude. He's got the biggest collection of anyone's here in the lakes region. I thought the one I posted was a really rare one and then I see them on sale through the site for $15.00 a copy.

What bothers me most about the map is the colors? We all have old maps that have some colors in them, but have you looked at the variety of colors that are in this map? It is hand drawn, but a Venus Paradise Pencil set or equivalent was definitely used for the colorization.

Are you talking about the colorization in the map I posted? The one about development around the lake?
I thought the colors were a little odd, too, for 1949. Maybe it is a reproduction? It was definitely a mass marketed map, though. I thought using green, orange and purple was definitely an interesting choice! nj2nh

Oh, I went back and reread your original post and that it was dated 1949. It makes it even more of a mystery, as I now suspect it was done on a plotter and that was not cheap. Particularly since you said it appeared to be mass marketed. When you get a chance someday I, and I assume alot of folks would love to see the rest posted.
