Default Black's

I heard a rumor that Black's Paper Store (Wolfeboro) is closing.

Anyone know anything?

I just can't imagine that. I have not heard that rumor. I hope it isn't true, it has been such a part of Wolfeboro forever! I know it was sold in the past couple of years.

Is it true? Doesn't anybody know? I was just saying to my husband not long ago that there are lots of things that can come and go without having an huge impace on my memories of the Lake Region, but losing Black's would just be the worst of it! My kids bought little toys there. I got magazines and postcards, t-shirts and sweatshirts, books and puzzles there. If it goes, I ain't coming back!

Default Blacks

In the May 28 Meredith News there are a bunch of ads under the heading: "Shop in Wolfeboro". Black's Paper store and Gift Shop is listed there, along with the message: "coming soon, Beads and Beading Supplies".

I also saw that ad in the GSN, Lady Jane and hope it means that they are not planning on closing.

Default Black's in Wolfeboro

With reference to the rumor that Black's is closing: TOTALLY UNTRUE

What is true is that they (Black's) are opening a new department specializing in beads and beading, offering supplies and classes, in a separate room on the second floor.

Everything else at Black's remains the same - newspapers, toys, table top items, gifts, Tee shirts and fleece, books, cigars, candy, cold drinks, cigaretts, a little bit of everything for everybody.

Black's has been open every single day for more than 140 yrs serving the population of the area. Stop by, you'll like it.

Question Wow! 140 years.........

Looks like in this photo that Black's occupied only part of the building?

Years ago, Black's was in the building next door. The one to the left that is now the t shirt shop. I should add, it wasn't Blacks then, it was just the " The Paper Store" I think. I don't know what year the Black's bought it.

I believe the Black's bought the store in 1946. My reference is a three volume set of books published around 1996 by the Wolfeboro Historical Society, "The History of Wolfeboro, NH, 1770 - 1994".

Well, I thought I remembered it being just the paper store, but I wasn't around in 1946 -maybe they didn't change the name for a while?

Default i asked the manager yesterday..

I was in Black's yesterday morning and spoke to the manager about this rumor, and even pointed out this tread - they were unaware of it. It couldn't have been Camp Guy that I spoke to, because I spoke to a gal, but maybe she passed the "we're not closing" info along to Camp Guy. Or maybe it was a coincidence that his posting appeared about 3 hours after my conversation ...

In any case, I'm glad the rumor was unfounded!
