I was curious, does anyone have any suggestions for specific locations on the lake where photos can be taken of a boat and/or people that offers the very BEST background scenery? A place that has the "Wow" effect and really represents all of Lake Winni/NH, but fits into a single frame of film. For now I am interested in a spot where someone could anchor safely (without upsetting any residents of course) and walk around in shallow water.
The location should be one that includes multiple scenic elements that "fill the frame" from the foreground to the far background such as the tallest mountains, edge of cove or point of an island, distinct rock outcrops/boulders, special tree(s). A man-made feature is OK too if it could be considered classic-looking (something made out of wood for instance). If the time of day is critical to the location please note this also. I'm also interested in locations like this where the sunset could be included in the shot for backlighting. Recently by chance I realized that the cove just to the north of Patrician Shores at Farrar Point works quite well looking toward the north/northeast off the edge of the point toward the Ossipee Mtns. There are shorelines on either side of the mountain view (the point is one) that fill the middle ground area of the frame. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have a couple of ideas, but I was hoping a serious amateur or maybe even a pro might be able to point me in the right direction (it aint called the "Big Lake" for nuthin!). Thanks, and enjoy the summer!! |

Wow -- that's a tough question...much like "How much is a cab ride?"
Everyone would have an opinion (or seven or ten) as to the best backdrop. Personally, I like mountain vistas of the lake. Locally, Mount Major (Belknap Range) and Bald Knob (Ossipee Range) afford sweeping views of the lake. The Sandwich Range does as well. Closer to Lake level, I can never get enough of the profile of the Ossipees in a lake picture. I simply love that range. It's a unique formation, too -- one of only a few examples of "moat volcanics" on the planet. Pretty cool. That being said, my favorite background of all, one that I use damn near every year to snap pics of my growing kids, is not on Winnipesaukee at all, but on Chocorua Lake, with the beautiful summit of Mt. Chocorua in the distance. Here on my desk, I have no fewer than three photos of kids taken with this backdrop. They actually think it's funny that I still insist on pulling off of Rte. 16 each year and make them pose together. "Humor me," I say. Ultimately, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, eh? So you'll see something that speaks to you. And there is certainly no lack of angles and sights to be creative with in this little slice of God's country... |

Grant, I second that opinion. Everytime I go by that lake I love the view. As a matter of fact my parents were given an original oil painting of Chocorua as a wedding present. My mothers uncle painted it & he used to own a gallery on Route 16 in North Conway which is now for sale (he passed away) His name was Parker. As much as I like all the areas you reference, I also think Chocorua is my favorite.

Funny, but despite all the thousands of scenic vistas I've soaked in up there -- from the tops of mountains, to the bottoms of lakes -- I STILL can't resist the urge to photograph that view ONE more time. Think I'll hit it next week! Psyched to be heading back to the Lake in the morning. |

Propeller I have an oil painting of Mt. Chocorua that I bought in No. Conway about 35 years ago. It is my office in Florida. All the other wall things there are of the lake including a 1946 map with my fathers notes written on it. Also enlarged photos of places I've owned on the lake. Great things to look at in the winter.

My mother in law has a Parker oil of Mt Washington (not the boat) at her N. Conway condo. I love to look at it every time I visit.
