Video of 78' Scamp

Popular opinion including Jack Irwins' is that this is the Scamp. His father once owned it. Jack said it was 77 feet if I recall correctly, and I measured it by hand at 78'.

This scuttled wreck in Paugus is no secret exactly but it doesn't appear on any chart I've seen. Bizer shows 2 barges in this area. Prior side-scan images posted shows one barge nearby along with the Scamp, attached.

Stern is split into 2-3 pieces lengthwise. Large pipe about 4" in diameter coming off the bow, and quite long too.

Sits in about 16 feet of water-try snorkeling it as it can be seen from the surface.

Lat/Lon using map datum WGS84: 43 35.264N / 71 28.216W

Nice photo and an interesting dive video. Thanks. Any idea how the scamp wound up on the bottom of the lake? When did it sink?

And great seeing you Sunday. It was a veritable unscheduled "Forum Fest" of Winnipesaukee divers.

And, gee, whadya know...a nice school of rock bass under the wreck! (Speaking of which, I was not surprised to see that the rock bass population on the Lady of the Lake has grown exponentially since I last dove the wreck...)

My dive buddy and I dove The Scamp and the nearby barge yesterday. In the surrounding area, we found 3 danforth anchors, one in practically perfect shape because it was almost 100 % sunk in the mud/clay.

Later in the day we dove another barge significantly north of The Scamp. My dive buddy found a wallet that had been lost by a 19 year old water skier in 1974. No money but it contained a 1974 fishing license, a 1974 college ID and a driver's license. My dive buddy located the person in Meredith and called him. He is coming down to pickup the "goods".

The visability in Paugus Bay was only 10 - 12 feet yesterday.

P.S. Just out of curiosity, can anyone identify any of the men in the picture of The Scamp?

Diver 1111 I think your post are great, I plan on diving the scamp this weekend is it in a high boat traffic area?

The Scamp is quite safe by any measure. There IS traffic along that shore but nothing like at so many other places; Flag up when you dive of course; You can likely anchor right on the wreck, descend the anchor line then ascend the anchor line thus maintaining maximum safety in this fashion.

The barge would an interesting thing to check out-go perhaps 45 feet south from the Scamp and you should hit it.

I think most of the divers online here touch very little if anything when they find whole wrecks. Bottle and relic collection is one thing, but these guys appear to be "leave it as is" when they find historic wrecks. Am I wrong?

I would never disturb a wreck I find the history very interesting and being able to see it with my own eyes is amazing.

diver 1111 thank you for the info we set anchor 10' off the skamps port midship

We did manage to find 2 dive masks , 2 snorkals 1 Dive fin (green) and a swim ladder someone forgot to pull up not far from the wrecks.

Diver1111, have you ever heard of the Flying Yankee? It was also a boat belonging to Jack Irwin. Do you know if it's still on the lake, or like the Scamp, on the bottom of the lake?

Thanks Hans! I didn't dive it last year but looking forward to it this year! I went to the Northshore Frogmen meeting last night and handed out my charter pamphlets. Several members said to say hi to you! Were you a former member I take it or still currently? I'm thinking of joining also as I have been a longtime member of the New England Aquarium dive club but just recently left after 20+ years. Hope we get a chance to meet this coming year! Jim

It's been my experience—from a boat—that visibility will probably never be better than a day before "Ice-Out".

It works. You must have scrolled down before it had time to download the photo's. It's page 59 that it should open to, but all the books photos up to page 59, have to open first. I have comcast and it takes me a full 30 seconds for it to pop up. At the bottom of the page it does tell you that message about having viewed too many pages or something.
