New places to escape

Looking for a place to escape on the lake to spend the day on the hook and let the kids swim. Without giving up any secret spots, does anyone have suggestions.

Are you looking for places to float and swim, or places where the kids will be able to stand up as well? The latter would be the hard part. We have a bunch of favorite spots to go drop anchor and float around. I will figure out a way to describe them best to you. Having a shoreline of sorts is difficult because there are not too many spots left that are not someone's front yard. There are still a few though, but not many. The sandbars are pretty well publicized.

Ideally where the kids could stand up. I remember an area between spinnaker and the naswa that wasn't bad.

It will all vary based on one thing.......wind. You kinda need to find multiple spots that accommodate different wind directions.

Before we had a place on the lake, we used to look for shorelines in the lee side of unpopulated shores. There's still plenty of them to find. One of our favorites was the east side of Crescent Is, north of Welch. No houses, no other boats, and careful navigation and hook setting found some nice places for the kids to swim and spend the afternoon.

Hey Ben. The sandbars will be easy to find. Just look for the mass of people standing outside of their boats. I like the sandbar in front of the margate, running towards spinnaker. It actually terminates at Barton's. There are only a couple of yahoo's showing up with their bad sound systems blaring, but not indecent music at least. Very friendly. My advice is to get there early to get a good spot and have two good anchors with rode and chain to hold you in position. It tends to get a little close as the day goes on, and I don't want to be the one swinging into anyone.

Another sandbar of mention is the one outside of W Alton Marine. Fun area. Clean due to the nature of a busy moving area in front of it, and no stagnant water. It gets busy and is fairly small, but really a lot of fun. Also it is a nice ride across the bottom of the broads in getting there.

Braun Bay is the big hangout area. We don't personally go there, but it seems that everyone else does that we talk to. Seems like a great area, but to popular for us.

We've heard Patrician Shores is great. We plan on going there this year. It is outside of Center Harbor. I've also heard it is bit tricky getting into the first time, so I'd watch from a distance first.

On the southwest side of Governor's Island Bridge seems to always have some people anchored there too. Might be worth a shot.

The smaller private areas are ones that are harder to find. Most are floating areas, more than stand-up. That other link had some good ones. But, there are many more to find during your explorations.

Do you trailer? Winnisquam is very boater friendly. There is a large sandbar off the Rte 3 bridge. There are a lot of sandy places to anchor around the 'squam. So give Winnisquam a try. Same with Newfound Lake. Both lakes are a lot less crowded and much better for anchoring or floating around. Lake Winnisquam public launch ramp is the best I have ever used from NH. Wellington Park on Newfound Lake has a great public launch ramp to use. Plenty of parking.
