Unhappy Very Sad News

I heard on Channel 9 this morning that the Captain of the Mount, Jim Pettengill, has passed away. They said his wife and son worked with him on the Mount as well.

Full story in the Citizen:

My deepest sympathies go out to his family.

Default Captain Pettengill

I talked with Captain Pettengill during the 2002 Shakedown Cruise. He told me the largest waves he ever saw on the lake were 14' and he liked it that way.

In memory...

Default The Mount and the Lake in General has lost a true Gentleman

Never did you hear Capt. Pettengill speak a harsh word. He was one of the few left in this world who believed in "please and thank you", two phrases most of us have forgotten. I take comfort in the fact that I was fortunate enough to spend time with this great man, and at the same time mourn the fact that I lost a friend and coworker that I so looked up to. There was many things that John taught me, and there was so many questions I still had for him. I hope that he is looking over us and smiling knowing that we are keeping the ship going and that I will always remember that " the boat always leaves the dock" and if I can only honor him in keeping a schedule as well as he did. We will carry on, he will never be forgotten or replaced! God Bless you Capt!!!

Default Great Guy

I barely knew him but what I remember he was a great guy. He trained me around 15 or so years ago when I went to work on the Doris E. One of the greatest and scariest experiences of my life on Winni was while training on the Doris E. in 8+ footers out in The Broads in very early spring. The waves were crashing up over the Doris and we were pitching and rolling. He was training a new captain as well as me. All the while he had a smile on his face and never even flinched. Especially when he told me to leave the wheelhouse and clean the scuppers because the bow seating area was about 2 foot full of water. That was an experience I will never ever forget. The new "captain" had us broadside to the waves a bit too long and Jim "gently" eased the wheel around to get us headed into the waves. I am glad I had the experience of meeting Jim. I can say I am probably a better boater for my experiences working on the Doris and with Jim.
