Wooden Boat Transom Name Painting

I purchased a refurbished vintage wooden Chris-Craft Runabout towards the end of last season and need to paint the name on the transom along with a relatively uncomplicated graphic. Any advice on a place that provides graphic design assistance and can do the painting in the Wolfeboro area? Thanks!

Okay ... so I can order vinyl lettering that I was able to mock-up online, but would applying vinyl letters to a vintage boat be sacrilegious and a no-no? Thoughts?

A little under $200 for the name (5.25" letters with gradient & shading) and the hailing port (2.25" letters with gradient & shading). Does that sound reasonable?

I assume hiring someone to hand paint would be much more than that, but I also want to do the right thing for the boat!

Does fantastic work and I know has done boats. I assume he could do it in place or make a wooden plaque that could be fastened to the boat.

Most of the Mahogany boat transom names are done with real gold leaf which is expensive. I believe there is a vinyl product available that emulates that look pretty well. You should contact the folks at the new Hampshire Boat Museum in Wolfeboro for a recommendation.

Vinyl seems so totally, way better than real gold leaf ..... with vinyl, it can get a yearly re-do with some ArmorAll Original and a paper towel ..... with gold leaf, some stand up paddle boarder will just scrape the gold right off the boat. Go vinyl .....

Get a name board. It looks classier and can easily be removed and transported instead of taking the boat someplace, when it needs to be refurbished. If you refinish the transom at some point, you don't have to mess with the name that is painted on.
When you sell the boat, you keep the name board. On my most recent boat I used the old name board for patterns (rounded stern, compound curves) and then mailed them back to the previous owner.
This looks like a very special boat, so, yes, go with real gold leaf. It's not that expensive and you will always be proud of it.

FYI, I used BoatUS and did it myself several years ago. It came out great and I was very happy with the price and the results.

It was fast and easy and no worries with their guarantee.

There is a wonderful Sign Shop in Gilford called Gator Sign. They are near the Airport. Stop in and talk to them about your project. They do a lot of boats and I'm sure you can get some good info. I find it's always best to buy custom items locally if possible. They are nice people.

If you did a full-bore restoration on this boat, It deserves full restoration. If you did it it on the cheap,vinyl is fine. We don't know here.

It was full, top-to-bottom restoration staying as close to original wherever possible, so I'd prefer to keep it that way and use a local supplier for a quality, authentic and period appropriate gold-leaf paint job.

Sounds about right.
When I used http://boatnameguy.com/ it was $75 for design, $225 for the actual vinyl (6'x2') and $75 for installation (which obviously wouldn't apply in your case).

All things considered, I think a tastefully done vinyl name graphic would look good, and can be done in vinyl that basically looks like outlined gold leaf.

This boat was made with mahogany. Originally this was not how the boat looked. It appears to me this boat was painted and was not finished with Epifanes. If it were my boat I would take the paint off down to the wood , repair those screw dimples, then refinish. In the long run you will thank yourself as to the looks and also the value. If the sides look like this they need to be done also. Use Epifanes (best out there), start with 2 coats of build then start doing the finish. Depending on how you might want it to look go for anywhere from 2 coats to 14 coats.
